Professionalism 101 Series:
We’ve all been there. Sitting at our desks, staring at the LinkedIn profile of someone who has a dream job in a dream city. It may seem daunting to go and request to connect with them, especially if you may not have much in common. Keep reading for three tips on networking and maximizing your chances of connecting with someone who may pave the way for your future as a professional!
Send a note when connecting on LinkedIn. This can be brief, but should give the professional an incentive to connect with you. If they are Cal Poly alumni, make sure to mention that! In the event you do not have anything in common, expressing genuine interest in learning more about their career is an important statement to make.
Be assertive in planning to speak to professionals. Whether it be a phone call or Zoom video meeting, be sure to present a few days/times that work for you. This way, the professional is more inclined to respond in a timely manner. By taking on the details and logistics, you also appear dedicated to learning more about roles and companies.
Continue networking even after the initial conversation. Be sure to send a thank you email within 24 hours of speaking to a professional. Expressing genuine gratitude for them taking the time out of their day to speak with you is not only kind, but leaves the door open for future conversations and asks.
